Obama Campaign Denigrates Presidency, American Flag

Before everyone gets their panties all wadded up, let me state right up front that the First Amendment protects the right of people to desecrate and burn the flag of the United States of America. Frankly, I am not one of those that gets all offended by commercializing the U.S. flag on everything from swimwear to advertising. However, I do believe there is a difference between desecration and disrespect and the sort of narcissistic adaptation show recently by the President of the United States.

The Presidency is an awesome institution, occupied by only 44 men in the history of this Republic. It represents the strength, vitality and resilience of this nation to all citizens and to everyone around the world. The office is a solemn position of trust.

This President and his campaign have denigrated the American flag.

But not in the usual way – by burning or stomping or mistreating.

This President has tainted the flag in a way that Monica Lewinsky’s semen-stained blue dressed tainted the Oval Office.

You can buy, for a mere $35.00, the following poster from the President of the United States’ official campaign website:

Why does this poster offend me?

He makes the flag about him. The Narcissist-in-Chief, the very commander of our Armed Forces, the leader of the free world, makes the symbol of American majesty about him.

If he were anyone but the President of the United States, the poster would probably not even catch my attention. Even if it did, I would shrug it off as just another person trying to capitalize and profit from the very symbol of freedom. But he’s not just anyone. Yes, he’s a candidate. But he’s also the incumbent. For God’s sake he’s the President of the United States of America.

Let’s remember other Presidents and occasions involving this same flag. I think some perspective is in order.

Jackie Kennedy kisses the flag draped coffin of her husband, slain President John F. Kennedy in the rotunda of the Capitol.

The flag-draped coffin of Ronald Reagan lies in the same rotunda as did Kennedy.

The American flag is about this Nation. It is not about one person. The flag represents the President, the Congress, the Supreme Court, the sovereign states, the citizens of this country. That flag does not represent one self-centered politician trying to raise money for a campaign.

His flag, the poster, which you can buy for $35.00, represents a self-centered, narcissistic individual who does not appreciate or respect the history of the United States of America.

Just as he wants to fundamentally transform the United States of America, so does he fundamentally transform the symbolism of the United States of America.

Burn it, desecrate it, stomp on it. But if you’re the President, respect it.
